After not being able to find Esther, Chanda returns home to find that her younger siblings have not been told that Sara has died, although they have picked up that something is going on. Iris complains that Sara has been sleeping the entire morning, and gets into an argument with Chanda.

Chanda tells her mother that the funeral arrangements have been made. Her mother has braided Sara's hair, and is stroking her cheek. She tells Chanda that someone, meaning Jonah, has stolen all of their money, so they won't be able to pay for the funeral. Chanda lies, and tells her mother that she took the money in order to place a deposit for the funeral. She then heads to the shebeen to get the money back from Jonah.

At the shebeen, Chanda finds Jonah—drunk—with his head in Mary's lap. Although Mary used to be a pretty girl, at 25 she has a scarred face, sores on her legs, and is missing her front teeth—a fact she no longer bothers trying to hide by covering her mouth. Her four children are being raised by her mother.

Mary explains that the gash on Jonah's forehead is the result of him smashing a rock against his head in order to release the demons. Chanda, always one to speak her mind, says the he should have smashed harder. She tells Jonah to be home in a couple of hours to be there when Mr. Bateman picks up Sara. She the retrieves the missing money from Jonah's pocket and leaves the shebeen.
